The tomb was discovered in the summer of 1959 after the excavations of the Italian professor Doro Levi, who dated the specific find to around 2000 BC. It was built on the northern side of the peak, at a point with a panoramic view of the Asterousia Mountains, Psiloritis and the plain of Messara. Important finds were found in this tomb, which are kept today in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, one of them is a statue with four dancers in a circle, which looks like a modern Cretan dance and is called Dancers from Kamilari, where it is now officially the emblem of the Cultural Committee of Kamilari.
